Gigan vs. Mothra by Virus-91 Gigan vs. Mothra by Virus-91
Whew, this one took me a while. Originally an ink drawing, I then colored it in photoshop. Took me a good chunk of hours to get the look I was going for, but I think I pulled it off. Despite Final Wars being one of my absolute least favorite Godzilla movies, I really liked the mythology behind Gigan and Mothra having this rivalry that began thousands of years ago. There hasn't been a whole lot of art between these two, so I figured that I'd go ahead and go for it.

This is seriously amazing. I love Mothra, and honestly the battle between her and Gigan was the highlight of the film. Despite it being so short.

For sure. The new Gigan seems a bit too fragile in my opinion. Not like the merciless killing machine he was in the Showa era

I concur. The design was great, but he couldn't take a hit at all. Showa Gigan shall forever remain my favorite Godzilla enemy. Mainly due to his outlandish design and his sadistic yet cowardly personality.

The FW Gigan was a lot more machine-like and faster while the Showa one was more brutal and terrifying, I agree

Good gravy, this thing is beautiful... the lighting, in particular, is simply amazing!

I always thought the dichotomy between Mothra and Gigan was interesting. Gigan is a walking salad shooter, Mothra looks harmless. Gigan looks "cool", Mothra looks "beautiful". Gigan is a coward, and will abandon an ally without a second thought. Mothra would give her life to protect the planet or her children.

Not only that, but it's interesting how they both wound up as "second-banana" characters to the main hero (Godzilla) and villain (Ghidorah).

That's actually a very good comparison with the contrasts of Gigan and Mothra. I'd actually never really looked at those two in that manner before. I do really wish there was more focus on them, and not only them, but the kaiju in general. It's a shame that Final Wars neglected showing the kaiju action in favor of some Matrix Rip-Off fight scene. I would've loved to see Godzilla and Mothra really interacting with eachother, but she really got the shaft in this film. Hell, the Shobijin don't even get a chance to sing the trademark Mothra song. I thought that was pretty lame.

I didn't hate Final Wars, but I agree there wasn't nearly as much emphasis on the kaiju as there should have been - especially with all these classic monsters making an appearance for the first time in decades, there was so much of a missed oppurtunity to show their history and personality (if only in this continuity). When I first saw this movie, my father came in the room during the last ninja fight, watched for about two minutes, then said "I thought you were waching a Godzilla movie!". True story.

Yeah, that sounds like what just about anyone would say. It really just doesn't feel or look like a Godzilla movie unless one of the monsters is on screen, which unfortunately just isn't enough.

AWESOME!!! Dude, this piece is really really epic!! This piece just looks so badass! You drew them both extremely well, especially Gigan. Personally, i didnt like Final Wars that much either. I thought it strayed way past what a Godzilla movie should have been. A lot of things made me dislike it. The bad acting played a part, but the most annoying thing was the DAMN techno music! There should be techno/rock music playing during a kaiju battle! It made me feel like i was watching the kaiju equivalent of Tekken or Street Fighter lol. The movie was way to fast paced to even enjoy the numerous battles. The CG, at times, really seemed cheap and cheesy too. Anywho, this is an EXTREMELY awesome piece! You did a really phenomenal job on this one. The colors and designs are just simply amazing. I'd say its one of your best ever :)

Thanks! I completely agree, the characters and plot were too far out there, even for a Godzilla movie which is pretty crazy. And that music... ugh. It's terrible. Has no place in a Godzilla film AT ALL. Give me a full orchestra over that garbage any day, Ryuhei Kitamura wasn't even a fan in the first place, the whole plot was practically all about his crap character Ozaki, Godzilla was turned into nothing more than a side character/plot device.

No problem dude! You really did a phenomenal job on this piece. It really came out great :)

I know. The movie was horrible. The only thing that saved it from becoming a total disaster was the fact that it was a kaiju movie. Like I said before, a lot of things were done horrible. It was too unrealistic and corny. I know Godzilla movies aren't close to being real, but the way ho they were done and told made the movies feel real, as if it were some real situation and always fitted the perfect amount of human moments and kaiju ones. It involved real people and real places, not some kind of Super Sayan X-men Alien descendant mutant person. And like you said, they made Godzilla take a seat in that one. It shouldn't have even been called Godzilla: Final Wars. It should have been called Ozaki: Final Wars. The idea was solid gold, having Godzilla fight all his rivals and go out with a bang, but the way they did it made it seem like they took two Godzilla sized steps totally in the wrong direction. I also hated how Zilla got his ass handed to him so badly since hes my favorite kaiju lol.

So i'm assuming your favorite kaiju is Gigan? :)

Well, my favorite kaiju is actually Godzilla. But when it comes to his enemies, my favorite is definitely Gigan. I love his design because it's so out there and crazy yet so harmful looking with all of the sharp edges. Not only that, but I love Gigan's personality as the sadistic guy that will take his time with you, but once the tides are turned against him, he becomes a coward and tries to make last ditch efforts. He was also the first kaiju to ever make Godzilla bleed, so he gets some major credit for pulling that off.

Another thing that's rather humorous about Final Wars being all about Ozaki, if you look at one of the original teaser trailers that actually had footage, it didn't have a single ounce of kaiju or Godzilla footage in it. It had a couple of human fight scenes and the camera revolving around Ozaki in a prayer like pose. Just all that more support to the claims that Kitamura didn't give a shit about Godzilla in the film and only cared about his human protagonist.

Gigan is preety cool. Both his Showa and Millenium designs were preety cool. Though my favorite Godzilla foe is Titanosaurus. Hes just plain awesome lol.

Wow, how could you have a Godzilla trailer without Godzilla or other kaiju? Its like having a car comercial without a car. That director didnt care shit about Godzilla. Its really a shame how they ruined that movie. It had so much potential and they did SO many bad things to it. I'm looking forward to the new movie though. I bet its going to be badass :D

Ah, Titanosaurus. I love that guy, great character design and his roar is awesome. It's a shame that he's only been in one movie, then again, there are a lot of one-shot kaiju that are loved by fans. But yeah, Final Wars should have been given to someone else to direct like Shesuke Kaneko. Now that guy knows how to make a good kaiju film. I'm anxious for the Legendary Pictures film as well, I just want some new information on it already. In the past year, all we have is a director and three writers that have taken shots at it. I wanna see some casting choices already so they can confirm that this film will not end up in development hell.

Yeah, Titanosaurus is awesome! I love that guy too. Hes one of the few kaiju who could actually match Godzilla in strength. Its a shame he hasnt been in any new movies though. But I am glad he wasnt in Final Wars. That would have been a really shity time to bring him back. Im just hoping this new movie doesnt turn out to be another Final Wars, but I highly doubt it will be. I also want more news on it too. There hasnt been an update in months.

The only good thing about Final Wars was how Gigan finally looked cool. But he was still a hopeless coward. None of which changes the fact that this is an awesome piece of artwork.

Thanks, but you didn't like Showa Gigan? I personally like Showa Gigan better than Final Wars, but that's just me. And I think Gigan should always be cowardly in some way, it's one of his defining character traits.

Well...guess I was always kinda lukewarm about Showa Gigan. His face was awesome and very different from just about everybody else, but the green-and-yellow color scheme of his body was pretty garish to me. No offense, friend; I'm not a raging fanboy who means to spew hate for or against other fans based on who/what they like. And I didn't hate him before; just like Gigan better afterwards. Then again, next to Jet Jaguar and the rest from that period, I guess Gigan's colors fit in nicely after all!
By the way, it's also nice to see Mothra's more kick-ass side as opposed to her nurturing side in your pic too. One of my favorite G-Fights is the adult Mothra dragging Godzilla around in 1964...priceless laughs and great depiction of a furious mother!

No, it's understandable, I know there are quite a few people that prefer the GFW look over his Showa appearance. But thank you for the compliment on the way I portrayed Mothra, and I must completely agree with you on the scene you are referring to from Mothra vs. Godzilla. I'm a big fan of the classic Mothra and the 1964 film is my second favorite kaiju film ever, just behind the original 1954 Godzilla.

1964 G vs. M is indeed an epic classic; I must agree wholeheartedly. And not just because I'll always have a crush on Yuriko Hoshi. Mothra was at arguably her very best throughout the film.

Umm...if you're remotely interested...I have a story in my gallery about G vs. M; you can always download the PDF to read at your convenience ...here

Ooh, I may have to get around to that when I get a chance. The idea of Godzilla fighting the Thing from John Carpenter's film is a very interesting one that me and one of my good friends have discussed on more than one occassion, so I'll definitely look into that once I have some free time!

The traditional inking and digital coloring turned out really well on this! The lighting looks really great too, with the sunset-ey glow around the building and reflecting off of the Kaiju. One thing I think would improve the picture would be if you smeared or blurred the smokey bits, to create a softer more transparent look, but that's really an easy fix, and that same short stroke texture works really well for things like Mothra's fur. Mothra's eyes look really

To each their own, I liked it when I initially saw it, but I've started to dislike it more and more everytime I see it. Although I will agree that Hedorah really got the shaft. They took one of the Showa Era's most powerful kaiju and reduced him to a throwaway character. Such injustice.
