While not my favorite MLP villain, I cannot deny that he is an overall cool concept. That and I did my Discord drawing at the start of last years' season, so I figured why not draw the main villain for the start of season 3?
Sombra was the only true villain. Night Mare Moon was driven crazy from being on the moon / being jealous Discord was just having fun Chrysalis was trying to find food and shelter for her kingdom Sombra imprisoned a whole empire, took away their hope, made them slaves, and cut them off from the world..... Sombra is the only villain so far.
Sombra is the definition of "Actions speak louder than words". He had everything planned down to the letter in case someone found out about the Crystal Heart. Dude was crazy prepared. He barely said a few sentences in two episodes, and the only reason he lost was because Spike went with Twilight.
He seems like too good of a villian for this show, here's hoping he re-appears somehow. I mean really, considering all the precautions he took to make sure he could retake control of the Empire, you'd think he'd have something planned to bring him back to power in case he failed.
My Little Pony began as one of the very few TV cartoons of the 1980s to kill characters off, or even have purely malicious and apocalyptic villains. Tirek is destroyed by the Rainbow of Light in the pilot, and the princess ponies blow Lavan to pieces in The Quest of the Princess Ponies. (Granted the 1990s brought us shows like Dragonball Z, Sailor Moon, and Digimon, whose body counts are very high and are still viewed by many as "kids shows", but still)
And My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has more appeal than G1 did through its character development, humor, moral outlook, and references. (giving us and developing characters we love all the way through as opposed to trading in new characters via Chuck Cunningham Syndrome)
Also, plenty of Disney movies kill their villains off, some in more family-unfriendly ways than Sombra (like in Tarzan when Clayton gets hanged). And those, like MLP, are more family/all-audiences shows. And any show that can't kill villains off typically doesn't HAVE villains on Chrysalis and Sombra's scale, or even Nightmare Moon and Discord's scale. This show isn't Caillou, or Dora, or Max and Ruby, or Mike the Knight. There were more restrictions when Hasbro intended it on their level, it must have been a challenge for Lauren to even get Nightmare Moon into the pilot (that's probably why she was portrayed as Luna corrupted to be decorrupted, when Lauren views her as the embodiment of Luna's bitterness possessing her), but now that we're known to them, Chrysalis and Sombra could be created. And btw, my headcanon goes that the comics are non-canon and Chrysalis fell to her doom. (seriously she'd need either Team Rocket immunity or faster than Rainbow Dash to survive a fall like dat)
Wow he looks badass. you did good job hiding his cutie mark
I love how Sombra always has a plan B. Got imprisoned? Curse the empire to disappear! Empire returned before he did? Amnesia Spell! find a book about the empire's defense? Tear a page out about its most important element! Find out about the crystal heart? Hide it away! Where? the place nopony dared to look! Figured out the location? Secret passage only revealed by dark magic! Find the passage? Secret door which can be unlocked by dark magic! Use dark magic on door? Victory! Unlock the door without setting off the trap? well...STAIRS! Finally find crystal heart? Proximity prison trap! and best of all...try to teleport out of the prison? ANTI-TELEPORTATION SPELL!
Twilight, Celestia's best student and smartest most clever unicorn in Equestria just got severely outclassed and outsmarted by a unicorn could who barely speak a coherent sentence and unlike the other villains, wasn't even directly scheming against her.
He also was able to improvise on the spot. Unable to enter empire due to Cadance's barrier magic? Tire her out. Unable to completely incapacitate Shining Armor? At least disable his magic. A piece of his horn made it in? remotely use it to spread corruption!
It makes me wonder if Sombra was actually a prodigy much like Twilight, if his talent was a special kind of magic and was also fond of books. I mean, he could have by all means gone all out and burned all the books in the library right? What if...Sombra was Luna's former best student? That would probably explain why Luna was not allowed to go and was antagonistic towards Twilight during the whole episode. Luna probably didn't like the idea that Celestia's best had to go against hers.
Damn! He and Twilight could have been friends! So much potential for this character! Hasbro c'mon man please don't kill him off just yet! At least give him backstory or something!
I have a strong feeling Sombra is going to come back later in the season.
Why? Because season 3 started with their antagonist, which has never happened before. The first 2 part episodes of Season 3 were more like the 2 part episodes of the season FINALE. So if Sombra is already destroyed, than who is going to be the main antagonist at the ending? So I have a strong feeling, we havn't seen the last of King Sombra.
NMM wasn't a villain on account of being a Jealous Luna Discord can't be a villain on account of insanity (he just was chaos doing what chaos does) and Chrysalis was wanting to feed her kingdom, depending on who you are she could be considered quite noble for what she did!
The only villain who was truly evil/terrifying was SOMBRA! I do hope we see more of him!
